Renate Pawellek (born 1959) has been working as a sex therapist for pro familia (German society for family planing, sex education and sex counseling) in Bochum for 30 years. She is mostly visited by pupils from all types of schools from the region (grade 7-10), but also from vocational schools and colleges. Adolescents are separated into girl and boy groups (for the boys there is a male sex therapist). The contents and methods of each event depend on the age/stage of development and the needs of the participants. The conversations take place without any teacher being present. Individual counseling is possible at any age and for free at pro familia, e.g. if one wants to get information about contraception, sexuality or pregnancy.
Mrs. Pawellek would enjoy being invited by an advanced history course to discuss with the pupils sex education and how sexuality was dealt with in the 1920’s and 30’s. This was a time of great change in sex education.
