freelance journalist

Babette (born 1972) is a freelance journalist and lives in Hamburg. She was on the pill for 15 years until the age of 30. Just in the course of an examination for a fertility treatment she was diagnosed with Factor V Leiden (Leiden refers to the Dutch city where the disorder was discovered). Factor V Leiden is the most common cause for a blood clot and therefore for a thrombosis. Babette never should have gone on the pill since the risk of getting a thrombosis increases further through the pill. Around 2-15 percent of Europeans are affected by this disorder.

Therefore, a thorough family research is important in order to identify the risks. In the case of Babette, her parents just learnt through her diagnoses that they had Factor V Leiden themselves and had passed it on to her. Fortunately, neither Babette nor her parents have gotten a thrombosis so far.
